Not legal advice

Everything on the Site, including articles, guides, directory listings, and comments, is general information only. It is not legal advice, and it is not a substitute for advice from a lawyer licensed in your state who knows the facts of your situation. We are not a law firm and do not provide legal services.

No attorney-client relationship

Reading the Site, creating an account, emailing us, or contacting a listed lawyer through the Site does not create an attorney-client relationship with us or with any lawyer. An attorney-client relationship forms only when you and a lawyer agree to it, usually in writing.

Do not send confidential information

Do not send confidential or time-sensitive information through the Site, by email to us, or through a listing’s contact form until a lawyer has agreed to represent you. Information sent this way may not be privileged or confidential.

Laws vary by state and change often

Laws and court rules differ between states, and sometimes between counties and cities. They also change through new legislation and court decisions. An article may not reflect the law in your state or the most recent changes, even if it shows a recent update date. Check the dates on each article and confirm the current law with a lawyer.

Deadlines: do not wait

Many legal claims have strict deadlines, called statutes of limitations, and some claims against government bodies have much shorter notice deadlines. If you miss a deadline, you may lose your right to bring a claim. If you think you have a legal claim, talk to a licensed lawyer promptly. Do not rely on the Site to tell you how much time you have.

In an emergency, call 911. If you are in danger, contact local law enforcement. If you have been arrested, you have the right to ask for a lawyer.

No guarantee of results

Every legal matter depends on its own facts and the law that applies. Any description of past results, settlements, or verdicts on the Site, including content supplied by law firms, does not guarantee or predict a similar outcome in your matter.

Attorney advertising

ATTORNEY ADVERTISING. Directory listings, firm profiles, and content supplied by law firms or lawyers on the Site may be considered attorney advertising under the rules of professional conduct in some states.

  • Each listed lawyer or firm writes its own listing and is responsible for making sure it complies with the advertising rules of every state where the lawyer is licensed or seeks clients. These rules are generally based on ABA Model Rules of Professional Conduct 7.1 through 7.3, which prohibit false or misleading communications and limit solicitation.
  • Some states have extra requirements. For example, New York requires certain advertisements to be labeled “Attorney Advertising”; Florida requires certain disclosures and, for many ads, filing with The Florida Bar; and Texas requires certain advertisements to be filed with the State Bar of Texas Advertising Review Committee.
  • The Site is operated from Ohio. Lawyers licensed in Ohio must follow Rules 7.1 to 7.3 of the Ohio Rules of Professional Conduct when they advertise.
  • Where a state’s rules require it, a listing must include the words “Attorney Advertising” and the name and office address of at least one lawyer or firm responsible for its content.
  • Unless a listing says otherwise, the lawyer has not been certified as a specialist by any state bar or accrediting organization. Words such as “specialist” or “expert” in a listing are the firm’s own description, not our certification.

Featured listings

Some directory listings are featured placements paid for by the listed lawyer or law firm. Featured status is not an endorsement, certification, or ranking of quality. Links in directory listings are nofollow. We are not a lawyer referral service, and we do not share in any lawyer’s legal fees.

We are not a lawyer referral service

The Site is a directory, not a lawyer referral service, and it is not certified or approved as one by any state bar or court. We do not choose a lawyer for you, we do not recommend one lawyer over another, and we do not receive any share of a lawyer’s legal fees.

No endorsement or verification of lawyers

Including a lawyer or firm in the directory, or mentioning one in an article, is not an endorsement, recommendation, or certification. We review submissions before publishing them, but we cannot confirm every detail, and listings can become out of date. Reviews and ratings are the opinions of the people who wrote them. Before you hire a lawyer, check their license and disciplinary history with the state bar or attorney licensing agency in your state, and ask about fees in writing.

Contributor content

Some articles are written by outside contributors, including practicing lawyers. Their views are their own. Contributor articles follow our Editorial Guidelines, but publishing an article is not an endorsement of the author or the author’s firm.

The Site links to other websites, including government sources, courts, and law-firm websites. We do not control those sites and are not responsible for their content, accuracy, or privacy practices. A link is not an endorsement.
