FindAttorneys.org (“Find Attorneys”) is a free legal information site and lawyer directory, written mainly for people in the United States. We publish plain-English articles about common legal problems in areas like personal injury, family law, criminal defense, employment, and estate planning.

We also keep a directory of law firms. You can search it by practice area and location.

Who runs this site

FindAttorneys.org is an independent online legal information blog and lawyer directory. It’s owned and run by Mike Turley, our Founder & Editor, and we’re based in Columbus, Ohio, United States. When an article is credited to Mike Turley, the site owner published it.

Mike Turley, Founder & Editor

Mike started FindAttorneys.org and runs it. He sets our editorial standards, assigns and edits articles, and works with the practicing and retired attorneys who write and review for us. He also checks directory listings before they go live and handles corrections. You can reach him at findattorneyshere@gmail.com or hello@findattorneys.org, or connect with him on LinkedIn.

Our contributors and reviewers

Many of our articles are written or reviewed by practicing and retired attorneys. Each one has an author page with their name, their firm, and a short bio that says where they’re licensed. We check each attorney’s license on the state bar’s public lookup before we publish their work. We only add a “Reviewed by” line to an article when an attorney actually reviewed it.

What this site is, and what it isn’t

The site is two things. It’s a library of general legal information that helps you understand a legal problem, learn the terms lawyers use, and work out what to ask. It’s also a directory where you can find lawyers near you by practice area and location.

Here’s what we’re not. Find Attorneys is not a law firm. We don’t give legal advice, and the people who run the site don’t act as your lawyers. Using the site, reading an article, or contacting a listed firm through it doesn’t create an attorney-client relationship with us.

We’re also not a lawyer referral service. We don’t match you with a lawyer or pass along cases, and we never take any part of a lawyer’s fees. We don’t rank lawyers or call anyone the “best.” A directory listing isn’t an endorsement or a recommendation.

Laws differ from state to state, and they change. For advice about your own situation, talk to a lawyer licensed in your state. Our full Disclaimer has more on this.

How we write and review articles

Our aim is simple. Legal information should be easy to understand and easy to check. A good article tells you what the law generally says, where the rule comes from, and when it’s time to talk to a lawyer.

Articles come from our editor and from outside contributors, most of them practicing attorneys. Every article goes through the same process, before and after it’s published.

We start from primary sources wherever we can. That means state and federal statutes, court rules, court opinions, and official government (.gov) pages. Bar association guides and established news outlets help with background. Legal claims, statistics, and references to statutes or cases should link to a primary or authoritative source, so you can check them yourself.

Our editor then reads each article for accuracy and clarity and takes out anything promotional. Our articles are there to explain the law, not to sell a service. When an attorney contributor includes an example from their own cases, it comes from that attorney, who is responsible for keeping client details confidential and following their state’s rules.

Some articles are also reviewed by a licensed attorney. If so, the article shows the reviewer’s name, the state(s) where they’re licensed, and the review date. If you don’t see a reviewer, no attorney has reviewed that article.

Each article shows when it was published and when it was last updated or reviewed. We go back over older articles and update or remove the ones that are out of date.

Contributors also have to follow our Editorial Guidelines.

Corrections

If you think something in an article is wrong or out of date, email hello@findattorneys.org or findattorneyshere@gmail.com with the page link and, if you can, a source. We’ll look into it and fix the article if it needs fixing. For bigger corrections, we add a note to the article saying what changed and when.

Independence and links

We don’t accept sponsored posts, we don’t sell links in articles, and we don’t accept payment to publish an article. We also turn down content that’s written mainly to influence search rankings rather than to inform readers.

Contributors can add one link in their author bio and one in the article body, and no more. Both links are marked rel=”nofollow.” The body link has to support a point in the article, such as a case results page or published research, and can’t point to a location or practice-area landing page. Some older articles were published under earlier rules, and we’re updating their links as we review them.

If a link is there to promote a firm rather than support a point, we take it out before the article goes live. Mentioning a law firm in an article isn’t an endorsement, and payment never buys a favorable article or a recommendation.

How the directory works

The directory lists law firms and attorneys by practice area and location. Firms ask to be listed through our Submit Listing page, and we check each attorney’s license and review each listing before it’s published.

Firms can choose a free Basic listing or pay a one-time flat fee for a Featured listing. Featured listings appear above Basic listings and are marked “Featured” so you know they’re paid placements. Links in all listings are marked rel=”nofollow.” The fee isn’t tied to leads, clients, or case results, and paying for a listing doesn’t buy articles, reviews, or ratings, or affect what we publish on our blog. Being listed isn’t an endorsement, and neither is being featured (see our Disclaimer).

Firms write their own listings. It’s their job to keep them accurate and to follow their state’s attorney advertising rules, and listing content may count as attorney advertising.

We don’t guarantee the quality of any lawyer’s services. Before you hire a lawyer, check their license and disciplinary history with the state bar or attorney licensing agency in your state.

Visitors can leave ratings and reviews on listings. Those reviews are the opinions of the people who wrote them, not ours. We read every review before it goes live, and we don’t publish ones that are fake, abusive, or written by the firm itself. We don’t remove reviews because they’re negative. Firms can’t pay for reviews or change what a review says, and a Featured listing has no effect on them.

If a listing is wrong or misleading, or it isn’t a real law practice, use the “Report abuse” link on the listing or email us. We remove listings that break our Terms and Conditions.
